Register a new vehicle

The vehicle registration service allows business users, registered as an authorised trader for Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT), to register new vehicles and pre-inspected vehicles online. You must also be registered to use the Revenue Online Service (ROS).

What you need to use the service

New Vehicles (Irish Distributor vehicles)

Please ensure that the electronic Certificate of Conformity (COC)[1] has been submitted before you proceed.

To use the service, you will need:

  • the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • the birth certificate number
  • the statistical code
  • the vehicle colour
  • the country of origin
  • the engine number
  • any exemption details[2]
  • any reserved registration details[3]
  • the payee Trader Account Number (TAN) payment method
  • the value of optional extras
  • the owner name and address.

Vehicles Pre-Inspected by the NCTS (National Car Testing Services)

If your vehicle has been pre-inspected by the NCTS, you will need:

  • the VIN number
  • the owner name and address
  • the payee TAN payment method
  • any exemption details.[4]

How to access the service

You can access the service through ROS, by following these steps:

  • Select 'VRT' from the 'Tax Type' option menu in the 'File a Return' section. 
  • Select the desired option from the 'Type' option menu.
  • Click the 'File Return' button.

[1] An e-CoC must be on file unless the vehicle being registered is of category type T5 and UV.

[2] This information is needed if the vehicle has an exemption.

[3] This information is needed if the vehicle has a reserved registration number.

[4] This information is needed if the vehicle has an exemption.
