Revenue seizes khat at Dublin Airport

As a result of an intelligence-led operation yesterday evening (26/11/2015), Revenue officers seized 53kgs of khat with a estimated street value of €26,000 at Dublin Airport.

The drugs were discovered concealed in the baggage of a 47 year old Italian national who was travelling from Addis Ababa.

He was arrested by An Garda Síochana and investigations are continuing.

Khat is a flowering plant native to East Africa and South Western Arabia. It contains a monoamine alkaloid called cathinone, an amphetamine-like stimulant, Khat is a controlled drug for the purpose of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and Schedule 1 of the Misuse of Drugs Regulations 1988.
