Revenue seizes cigarettes worth €12,000 in Rosslare

Yesterday (30/06/2016), Revenue Officers seized 23,000 cigarettes at Rosslare Europort, following routine profiling of traffic arriving on a ferry from France. A people-carrier was stopped and searched, and with the assistance of detector dog Alfie, the cigarettes were found concealed in the floor of the vehicle.

The car was seized and the driver, a Lithuanian national, was arrested and appeared in Gorey District Court this morning (01/07/2016). He was remanded in custody to Cloverhill Prison, to appear in Wexford District Court next Tuesday (05/07/2016).

The combined retail value of the smuggled cigarettes, branded Minsk, NL’s Newline, NZ Gold Superslims and Winston Blues, is approximately €12,000 and represents a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €9,500.
