Revenue seizes smuggled cigarettes at Dublin Airport and Port

On Sunday morning (06/11/2016), Revenue officers at Dublin Port seized 28,700 cigarettes when, based on routine profiling, a refrigerated truck arriving from Lithuania was selected for scanning and examination.

The smuggled 'Marlboro Gold' cigarettes were discovered concealed in the mixed refrigerated load. The driver, a Lithuanian man in his mid 30s, was questioned, and the truck was seized and later released on payment of a penalty.

On Sunday night (06/11/2016), as a result of routine profiling, Revenue officers at Dublin Airport seized 108,780 smuggled cigarettes from 22 passengers arriving from Chisinau, Moldova. The cigarettes were branded 'Marlboro', 'Kent', 'Winston', 'Monte Carlo', 'L&M', 'Pall Mall', 'Glamour', 'Camel' and 'John Player'.

These seizures represent a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €60,900 and are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illicit cigarettes in the shadow economy.
