Revenue seizes cigarettes and alcohol worth €7,000 in Dublin
Yesterday (08/09/16), in an intelligence-led operation, Revenue officers seized 8,000 cigarettes following the search of an apartment in Finglas. The cigarettes, branded "NZ", originated in Belarus and have a retail value of €3,700, representing a potential loss to the exchequer of €3,150. A Lithuanian man in his 30s was interviewed and investigations are ongoing with a view to prosecution.
In a separate operation last Wednesday (31/08/16), Revenue officers seized over 300 litres of alcohol and 2,960 cigarettes at Dublin Port. The contraband was discovered following the search a truck which had disembarked a ferry from Holyhead and was driven by two Polish Nationals. The estimated combined retail value of the undeclared goods is €3,300, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €2,200.
These seizures are part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illicit alcohol and tobacco in the shadow economy.
