Revenues seizes 14,000 smuggled cigarettes at Cork Airport

This afternoon (18/11/2016) at Cork Airport, following routine profiling, Revenue officers arrested two Lithuanian men who had arrived on a flight from Tenerife, when they were discovered to be carrying 14,000 contraband cigarettes concealed in their baggage. The men are aged in their 30’s and are being held in Togher Garda Station, to appear in Cork District Court tomorrow (19/11/2016).

The seizure is part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illicit cigarettes in the shadow economy. The smuggled cigarettes, branded 'Bravo' 'BN' and 'L&M Blue', have a retail value of more than €7,500, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €4,500.

Most people pay the right amount of tax and duty. If you know someone is evading tax or involved in smuggling, report it to Revenue.

You can do this quickly, easily and confidentially using our secure online reporting form or by contacting our confidential free phone number 1800 295 295. For more information, see Reporting shadow economy activity/Tax Evasion.
