Revenue seizes cash, alcohol and cigarettes at Rosslare and Dublin Ports

Last Friday (08/06/2018) at Rosslare Europort, Revenue Officers seized €17,000 when, based on routine profiling, they stopped and searched a van that arrived on a ferry from Cherbourg. The cash was detected with the assistance of Revenue detector dog Flynn. The driver and passenger, two men in their 30’s and 50’s, were questioned and Revenue officers seized the cash suspecting it to be the proceeds of, or intended for use in, criminal activity.

On Friday night (08/06/2018), at a special sitting of Gorey District Court, Judge Haughton granted a three month detention order to allow Revenue to investigate further.

Separately, at Dublin Port on Friday evening, (08/06/2018), Revenue officers seized 132 litres of beer and 4,320 cigarettes branded ‘Winston’, ‘L&M’ and ‘NZGold’. Based on routine profiling, two vans that arrived on a ferry from Holyhead were stopped and searched. The smuggled products have a retail value of over €2,700 and represent potential loss to the Exchequer of €2,000.

The majority of people pay the right amount of tax and duty. If businesses or members of the public have any information about smuggling or the sale of illegal alcohol or tobacco products, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
