Revenue seizes smuggled alcohol and tobacco products in Dublin and Wexford

On Saturday (12/05/2018), officers at Dublin Port seized over 700 litres of alcohol when, as a result of routine profiling, they stopped and searched a van that arrived into Dublin Port from Holyhead. Separately on the same day, Revenue officers in Rosslare Europort seized over 1,000 cigarettes and 1.5kgs of tobacco when they stopped and searched a car as it arrived on a ferry from Roscoff.

The seized alcohol has a total retail value of over €5,600 representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €2,970. The seized tobacco products (cigarettes, branded ‘L&M Blue’, ‘Marlboro’ and ‘Benson & Hedges’; and ‘ Golden Virginia’ tobacco) have a retail value of approximately €1,300, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of over €1,000.

Investigations are ongoing in both cases with a view to prosecution.

These seizures form part of Revenue's ongoing operations targeting the illegal importation, supply and sale of alcohol and tobacco products in the shadow economy. If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal alcohol, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
