Revenue seize contraband worth over €76,000 in North Dublin
On 09/03/2025, as part of a multi-agency operation involving Revenue, An Garda Siochana and members of the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA), along with Revenue dogs, Maggie and Toby, in North County Dublin, Revenue officers seized over 79,200 cigarettes and 1.25 kgs of tobacco.
In addition, 667 litres of alcohol (115 litres of which is believed to be homemade alcohol), was also detained by Revenue officers for further investigation. The alcohol seized has a value of over €4,000 with a potential loss to the exchequer of €2,450. The seizures were made following the search of a market in North County Dublin.
Multi-agency checkpoints, which formed part of the operation, resulted in a number of breaches of road traffic offences along with one VRT offence for Revenue. HPRA officers also seized a quantity of unauthorised medicinal products on the day.
The seized cigarettes and tobacco, of various brands, had a retail value of more than €72,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of approximately €57,300.
A number of individuals were questioned on the day along with one man in his 50s arrested by An Garda Siochana for suspected money laundering offences.
Investigations are ongoing.
These seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply of illegal tobacco products. If businesses, or members of the public, have any information regarding smuggling, they can contact Revenue in confidence on the confidential free phone number 1800 295 295.
