How will the Automated Import System (AIS) impact your business?

Importers

You are legally obliged as an importer of goods from outside of the European Union (EU) to lodge a customs import declaration in AIS.

You may use

  • your own internally developed and supported customs software

or

  • software provided by an external systems provider.

In all cases you should ensure that:

  • the customs software you are using can interface with AIS

and

  • your staff are familiar with the content and structure of declarations and message types.

If you employ a customs agent to manage your customs import formalities, you should ensure that the software your agent uses can interface with AIS. If a customs agent is acting on your behalf, you must ensure that the information you provide to your agent is accurate and correct.

Note:

If you lodge or plan to lodge export declarations, you must use the AEP system and continue to use the current AEP system software.
