Traceability and security features system
Overview
To address the issue of illicit trade, the European Union introduced systems of traceability and security features for tobacco products. This is provided for by Articles 15 and 16 of the Tobacco Products Directive (Directive 2014/40/EU).
From 20 May 2019, all cigarettes and roll-your-own placed on the market in Ireland must carry a unique identifier.
From 20 May 2024, this requirement will be extended to cover all tobacco products.
